I recently came across this story I had written in 2015 and instantly remembered why it remains one of my favourites.
A circular home designed by mid-century modernist architect James Strutt to fit around a maple tree on top of a hill is one of the most unique in Ottawa.
Built in the 1960s in the west end neighbourhood of Qualicum, the home and the property have changed little in almost 50 years, with the original red brick, B.C. fir and cedar materials of the home still very much in evidence.
The original owner described it as looking “like a deck of cards thrown loosely around the tree.” It was actually a series of pie-shaped wedges that followed the contours of the land. Check out the story.
